Career as a Bank PO
What is it?
Probationary Officer/Assistant Manager is the first ladder to serve at an Officer Cadre in the banking organization. After joining the bank, a PO has to serve a probationary period from 1 year to 2 years depending on the bank. Job in banking sector is a transferable job where a PO is expected to work in a single branch for maximum period of 3 years.
There is no single specific work assigned to the Assistant Manager/PO. Rather he/she is expected to assist his/her Branch Manager in every field and sector of banking. It could be administrative work, handling duties like managing the branch in absence of Branch Head, Routine Operations or other tasks like increasing the bank portfolio in Credit And Advances, Recovery Management, Claim Settlements, etc. There are various other divisions in banking like foreign exchange, treasury, clearing, risk management, etc. where one can further choose to work according to interest

- Interact and get acquainted with different departments of bank
- Responsible for supervising clerical work in the bank
- Guide the customers of the bank and handles customer complaints
- Keep abreast of circulars and latest developments of the bank
- Right Hand to the Branch Manager in performing various duties

One has to clear a CWE (Common Written Examination) conducted by IBPS for 19 public sector banks.
SBI and Private banks have their own separate examinations as per requirements and vacancies of the bank.
A Bank PO gets initial salary of 4-6 lacs per annum. Other allowances like medical, Leave Fare Concessions, Furniture, Travelling, Entertainment, etc. Concessional Rate of Interest for staff in loans (Housing loan, conveyance loan, overdraft limits, etc.) are given.
